Diamond Cut

"Among the 4Cs of Diamond characteristics, Cut is the most complex and difficult to analyze. Despite being so tricky to understand, it is a pivotal factor in determining a diamond’s quality and value. Often misunderstood as a diamond’s shape, Cut is a different characteristic that determines how well the light interacts with diamond facets. It requires precise workmanship and great artistry to elegantly cut a diamond that reflects the light from the outer surface and bestows a brilliant sparkle.

GIA grades round brilliant diamond cuts from Excellent to Poor, based on symmetry, brilliance, polish, and fire. An Excellent cut is highly preferred, though budget-conscious buyers may opt for lower grades.

While 55% of round cuts earn an Excellent grade, they can still have flaws in depth, table, or angles. A standard chart helps classify these cut grades globally.

When mined, diamonds are rough and lack brilliance. Skilled craftsmen cut, shape, and polish them to reveal their inner beauty, balancing weight retention with achieving an exceptional cut.

Traditional hand-cutting was labor-intensive and costly, but modern laser cutting ensures precise symmetry and polish, making it easier to create fine-quality diamonds efficiently.

Brilliant Cut

Characterized by triangular and kite-shaped facets radiating from the center, the brilliant cut creates a dazzling appearance resembling crushed ice or a prism under light. While most prominent in round diamonds, this cut is also seen in Cushion, Oval, Marquise, Pear, and Trillion-shaped diamonds.

Colorful Diamond

Step Cut

The step cut features linear, rectangular facets arranged in a step-like pattern. This style magnifies the diamond's dimensions, creating a captivating "hall of mirrors" effect when reflecting light. Popular choices for step cuts include Emerald, Asscher, and Baguette-shaped diamonds.

Colorful Diamond

Mixed Cut

The mixed cut combines the best of brilliant and step-cut styles, offering enhanced sparkle and a unique appearance. This versatile cut is frequently used in Princess, Radiant, Cushion, and other modern diamond shapes, reflecting light with a stunning "crushed ice" effect.

Grades of Diamond

This is the highest-grade diamond, exclusively for Round Brilliant Cut diamonds, offering superior optical symmetry beyond an ideal cut. When viewed from different angles, it reveals distinct heart and arrow patterns. Less than 1% of all diamonds belong to this exceptional category.

Ideal+Hearts

The Ideal grade is the second-highest for Round Brilliant Cut diamonds, focusing on perfect proportions to maximize brilliance. Like the Ideal+Hearts grade, it is extremely rare, with less than 1% of all diamonds meeting this standard.

Ideal

Excellent cut diamonds are the most popular due to their superior brilliance and fire. Nearly all light reflects through the table, creating a stunning sparkle that makes these diamonds highly sought after.

Excellent

Diamonds with a "Very Good" cut grade offer exceptional brilliance and fire, with most light reflecting effectively. To the naked eye, the difference between "Excellent" and "Very Good" cuts is nearly indistinguishable.

Very Good

Good-cut diamonds reflect a decent amount of light, providing a pleasant sparkle and brightness. They are a great choice for buyers seeking quality at a more affordable price.

Good

Fair-cut diamonds allow light to escape through the sides and bottom, resulting in limited sparkle. These diamonds are often used as side stones to balance the cost of jewelry.

Fair

Poor-cut diamonds lack brilliance and fire, as most light escapes through the sides. These diamonds offer minimal sparkle and are not recommended for those seeking visual appeal.

Best Diamond Cut

The best diamond cut is one that optimizes light reflection by directing it through the table and crown, enhancing the stone's brilliance and sparkle. Properly cut diamonds avoid light leakage through the sides, ensuring maximum luminosity.
Among all cut grades, Excellent Cut diamonds stand out as the most preferred choice. Their precise proportions and optimal facet angles amplify brilliance, making the diamond appear brighter and more radiant. Even a smaller diamond with an excellent cut holds greater value and appeal than a larger diamond with a poor cut.
This cut not only elevates the diamond's visual beauty but also increases its desirability for buyers seeking unmatched sparkle and quality.
